Jonas Wiedner is doctoral researcher at the Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS) at the University of Cologne. His research focuses on the intersection of questions in social stratification and mobility, social change and immigrant integration. To answer these questions, his research mostly relies on large scale population surveys and panel data, and applies advanced statistical modelling techniques.

Jonas Wiedner’s dissertation project is entitled “Against the odds. Education-to-job matches and less-educated workers’ pathways into success” and investigates the phenomenon of undereducation – workers having less education and training than supposedly required by their job. In a country-comparative design drawing on longitudinal data from the United Kingdom and Germany, the study examines the mechanisms that allow some workers to gain access to high occupational positions despite relatively low educational attainment. The project combines research on three different levels: the micro-level of worker characteristics, the meso-level of labor market structure and occupations, and the macro-level of educational expansion and labor market change.

In previous work (together with Zerrin Salikutluk and Johannes Giesecke) commissioned by the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) he has reviewed social science evidence on factors that shape refugees’ labor market integration trajectories.
